Bay of Pigs

Imagine you're in a Havana casino lounge in 1961.There's a band in the corner playing half learned versions of American radio hits. That sound is the BAY OF PIGS.

Their debut release ' FOR LOVERS ONLY ' fuses an effortless and timeless soul groove to the dixie-fried guitar of Kev Garant [ Deadset Friendlies / Largest Living Things ] and Pete Lawler's easy rolling vocals.[ Temperance Union / Crazy Baldheads / Weddings Parties Anything ]

Reminiscent of Willie Nelson's 'Stardust' , this is an album that is unified in both its sound and selection of material. ' FOR LOVERS ONLY ' is one of those records as warm and comfortable as your favourite jacket and twice as stylish. Put it on and you feel great.

Live, the BAY OF PIGS show includes thoughtful musings on love and the human condition with a band who can play it slow and gentle then pick it up and get you up against the wall. They have turned venues into their own kind of sultry den, dazzled the cognoscenti and made Angela Davis get up and dance.

' The Pigs break my heart then stitch me up again. ' Tim Rogers, You Am I

The easy rolling vocalist Pete "Dr Pump" Lawler has been rocking the scene for decades with Wedding, Parties, Anything, Crazy Baldheads and now with Tim Rogers. In Melbourne 's rock community, Pete "Dr Pump" Lawler is regarded as a statesman, a gentleman of lavish dress and a celestial soul brother.

Dr Pump, how does it feel to be crooning love cover songs in rock cabaret style?

Man, do you listen to Magic 693? (the old one not the new with Darren Hinch) They play all those great songs most are not sung by the people that wrote them. The songs are top shelf. and the performances are stand out. You know Elvis, Aretha, everyone who sings the Bacharach / David songs , they are interpreters of great compositions. That's what it takes. Nobody every asked Sinatra if he wrote a song!" The Pigs are just laying it out. Channeling the emotion of the composition. Interpreters of L -O -V -E "

Guitarist and ex New York resident Kev Garant has played with everyone from Sting to Afrika Bambaataa.  Since moving to Melbourne in the early 90's Kev has worked with Paul Kelly, Mandawuy Yunupingu, Neil Finn , Archie Roach, Dan Warner, Stephen Cummings, Ruby Hunter, and Renee Geyer just to name a few.

Kev, How did two blokes with rock credibility end up making a record of love songs?

"A few years back both Pete and I had just come out of long term relationships we were hanging a lot  drinking, singing and playing Burt Bacharach songs , Nina Simone, The Carpenters, the daggier the songs were the better they made us feel. These dam love songs made us feel so good we had to get into the studio straight away to make a record or it could have been the home brew. Which ever it was I love what we recorded. For Lover's Only is slow, smooth and picks up in all the right spots, it's what foreplay is all about."

BAY OF PIGS Cd launch featured special guests Joel Silbersher, Tim Rogers and Dave Graney.
