Raw contains a vibrant, eclectic bunch of unique new songs from Matthews following his well received 2007 “Exposed Roots” Album. From the opening song “Journey” to the closing “A Long Way From Home”, a panoramic personal soundscape of heart and mind, life’s views, emotions and experiences is shared with the listener……… There are flares of blazing intensity, ferments of melancholy, faltering laments, frescos of folly……… These songs are determinedly not clinically precise; they are “raw” windblown tunes; the breaking waves of melodies and lyrics arriving on this songwriters shore. This Album’s peeled back presentation of Matthews’ piano, guitar, mandolin, harmonica and vocals offers unadorned, naked songs; at once both newborn and mature. The live, translucent studio sound recording invites the listener to pull up a chair next to the singer and the immediacy of the instruments.
