From an extensive background playing in various bands
and theatre shows throughout Australia and overseas, songwriter
John Baker has found his musical niche with accordianist,
Gayle Buckby. Initially asking Gayle to play on one track
of The Raft ( John's solo album released in 2003, independent
- see review below ), John discovered that the heady mix
of acoustic guitar and piano accordian created a captivating
and unique atmosphere. He began to write music specifically
for the two instruments, and the duo was formed late in
2003.
The Baker Suite currently live in Adelaide, Australia
playing regularly in bars, cafes and clubs, Australia-wide.
They have also played in Kyoto Japan, have supported Francois
Breut ( from France ), played for an international theatre
show ( from Portugal ), and have written music for short
films (My Space series for SBS Television).
The Baker Suite create a seductive and potent world, with
songs influenced by a background in jazz but with latin,
European and contemporary folk elements, layed with intimate
and gentle lyrics.
They have recently released their first full length CD,
'Slow Music" which includes guest musicians from
Sydney and Adelaide (vibraphone, double bass and percussion)
on a few tracks.
"A true storyteller, John Baker has no trouble capturing
your attention and drawing you in to his beautiful world
of warm, moody tones, gentle melodies and inspired lyrics...Its
a perfect blend of folk and Latin rhythms with a pleasant
vocal style making this one of the best acoustic albums
that I've heard in a long, long time" Rip It Up
magazine, March 2004

Ménagè a Guitar
with Caliente Guitar Trio and Aloysius Leeson
Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre
$20/15
Following close on the heels of this years Guitar Festival, Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre presents an evening featuring three acts who played at the 2007 Adelaide International Guitar Festival.
Aloysius Leeson on solo guitar, is accompanied by dancer Kristy Manuel. Aloysius is a guitarist who works in a variety of styles, including flamenco, classical and latin jazz. A long running infatuation with flamenco led him to spend time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers, studying with maestros and playing at juergas (parties). Eventually he was able to work at the dance studios of Javier Cruz and Mari Angeles in Seville, and since coming back to Adelaide, Australia has continued to work with local singers and dancers. www.aloysiusleeson.com
The Caliente Guitar Trio gave a sold out performance at last years guitar festival. Caliente guitarists Mike Bevan and Al Valodze are well known to Adelaide audiences for their intricate arrangements of Brasilian Choro and Samba music as well as textured jazz improvisation. The recent addition of one of Adelaide’s finest guitarists, Dylan Woolcock, has enabled a wider exploration of musical styles and sounds. The exclusive use of 6 and 7 string classical guitars provides an exotic, acoustic sonority, coupled with arrangements featuring mandolin and cavaquinho. Original pieces written for the trio display the diversity of these musicians as the Brasilian thread is interwoven with Gypsy, Tango, Classical, Cuban and Contemporary Forms. They are currently working on arrangements for a forthcoming cd release. www.myspace.com/calientebrazjaz

Christmas show at The Wheatsheaf
with The Yearlings and The Joans
Free
The Yearlings combine warm harmonies with delicate flat-picking and sparse country blues to create songs that are at once haunting and soothing.
Robyn Chalklen's voice demands attention - smooth, breathy and fragile, you listen to each syllable pass you by as you lean in, turn it up and immerse yourself in a story told by a fine songwriter devoid of pretence. Her beautiful, ethereal and mysterious songs are the perfect counterpoint to Chris Parkinson's earthy compositions, while his 'hang-on-every-note' guitar playing remains as compelling as ever.

Sometimes described as "Spooky Folk Blues", The Joans meld ukuleles, guitar, fiddle, banjo, accordion, mandolin and vocals to interpret original songs and an eclectic range of folk, blues, spiritual, country and old jazz material. Featuring Di Caught (Problem Pony) singing songs of love, death, chain gangs, lunar thoughts and longing whilst strumming her beloved ukulele while local surf jazz/dirty rock & occasionally crooning heartthrob Jim Redgate (GT Stringer, King Daddy and James Beige) has his way with his banjo and guitars. Kim Perry of Adelaide Hills string outfit The Fiddle Chicks adds the melodic twist with her unique and thoughtful violin playing.
